What’s the deal?

I have been having some health issues the last couple of months. Actually, scratch that, I have been having health issues for about a year. The last half year it snowballed to a point where I cannot function properly anymore. I seem to have had a cold for almost a year, my glands have been swollen for about as long, I’m tired all the time, I either sleep too much or not at all, I’ve lost my motivation, my brain has become a sieve, I’m stressed, I get depressed, I’ve been gaining weight and my body just basically feels out of whack.

I’ve been to see my doctor multiple times and they couldn’t find anything particularly wrong with me. I was obviously exhausted but the only explanation they could give was my allergies (even though I take a daily allergy pill) and stress. I admit, I haven’t been the best at dealing with my stress, but I knew it had to be more than just that. So when a friend recommended seeing a homeopathic doctor I agreed that even though I was skeptical, it might be a good second opinion. After explaining my symptoms the doctor was fairly sure that there were problems with food intolerances (possibly a leaky gut) and my adrenal gland. This doctor said that I could either do multiple clinical tests to define which intolerances I may have or that I could have something called an EAV test (basically electric acupuncture). The clinical tests would take longer and be more expensive than the EAV test. However, the EAV test is based on natural medicine and not clinical medicine. As I like things that are efficient and I do believe in the benefits of natural medicine, I decided to go with the EAV test.

I got the results this morning. Good news: my immune system is very strong (really? doesn’t seem like it lately). He also explained that the body is made up of yin and yang, and it’s different in each person. Yang organs are the ones that tend to work very hard (too hard), yin organs are on the other side of the spectrum and don’t work hard enough. My yang organs are my kidneys, bladder and adrenal glands. My yin organs are my liver and gallbladder. Other results from the test: I have adrenal fatigue, stress, and a build-up of toxins in my liver and connective tissue. I also have some food intolerances: alcohol, cow’s milk and all its derivatives, pork, wheat, citrus, coffee and soy.

So what does the doctor order?

  • Cut out all my food intolerances completely for three months and then only have them in moderation.
  • Deal with stressful situations properly, live a physically and mentally healthy lifestyle.
  • Take homeopathic / herbal medicine to detox, to improve the function of my liver and to deal with the adrenal fatigue.

Basically, I should change my entire lifestyle. I normally eat a fairly healthy diet and exercise often, including yoga, but I’ve been slacking off lately so I need to get my rear back in gear, with the extra effort of removing all my food intolerances and getting serious about my mental health. I’m a little bit skeptical about the herbs, as I have zero experience with this type of medicine, but in any case it won’t hurt.

So for the next three months I will be following the above three pointers. In this blog you’ll be able to follow my progress, check if I’m keeping it all up (hurray for social control) and see how I deal with my rather strict food (and drinks) plan.  You’ll see how I experience a summer without ice-cream, cocktails and boozy, pasta picnics but full of healthy and yummy (although limited) food, exercise and mindfulness. I will try to keep whining and self-pity to a minimum. All in all, I see this as an exciting challenge that I hope to pass with flying colours. Hopefully by September I will be back to my healthy and happy self.

I promise that not all posts will be this long, I strongly believe in KISSing (Keeping It Short and Sweet).
